Electrical stimulation has a long history in ophthalmology and was thought to be beneficial as early as 1873. Conditions researched that have demonstrated a positive include (but are not limited to) amblyopia, retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and optic nerve atrophy. Recently, interest has been renewed by reports of efficacy in a small number of patients with nonarteritic ischemia, traumatic optic neuropathy, and longstanding retinal artery occlusion. In addition, interest has been raised by reports that improvement may be attributed to the release of neurotrophic factors.
The application of electrical stimulation therapy as Electro Acupuncture, Micro Current Stimulation (MCS), Transecorneal Electric Stimulation (TES) or repetitive transorbital alternating current stimulation (ACS) is based on the potential of the eyes and brain improving and /or maintaining optimal function through the administering of external electric current impulses. Dr. Rosenfarb clinical experience over the last 20 years, has shown that specific methods of electro therapy can cause significant recovery of lost vision as well as long term vision preservation.
For degenerative eye diseases like optic nerve and retinal diseases, neuroplasticity (functional reorganization) of the eyes and brain may be a critical treatment to restore and preserve vision. Based on research and our first-hand clinical experience, results can be achieved through therapeutic electrical stimulation. It is believed that this treatment activates the retinal ganglion cells, enhances the signal conductivity through visual pathways (including optic nerve), and embodies the visual cortex reserves, resulting in an optimal functional state of the whole brain and entire visual system.
Treatment focuses on activation of retinal neurons using non-invasive electrical impulses with different shapes and amplitudes through electrodes located on and/or around the eyes. External electrical signals applied to the retina can induce functional activity in the visual cortex (prestriate area) located deep in the brain.
During the treatment, it is believed that the conduction visual pathways (optic nerves, tracts, central visual pathway) are activated both from periphery by retinal ganglion cells and from the top by the neurons of the occipital cortex. The method of therapeutic electrical stimulation was developed.by taking into account that such organization of the visual system includes the interaction of center and periphery, cells and their axons, and forming a new connectivity between different brain structures.
The Treatment Process:
- Prior to treatment, we will do an intake and estabish baseline vision testing. We also ecommend that you receive testing from your local eye doctoe 1-3 week before starting treatment.
- One of the various froms of Electrical stimulation (MCS, TES<,ACS) will be performed daily from Monday to Friday for 2 weeks The duration of a treatment session is 30 minutes.
- Every treatment session includes:
- After completion of the two-week stimulation course, the patient will have another round of vision testing and Dr. Rsoenfarb will review your Report of Findings.
- A Home Care Plan is developed to suit the patient’s specific needs. This includes the plan for diet, exericse, supplements, lifestyle modifications, stress management and supplmental home-care that can be done at home in order to help promote vision recovery and/or stabilization.
- Repeated courses of electrical stimulations can continue, if the patient showed a clear and measureblae resonse. Most patients have resported benefits from a mainteance treatment frequency of every 2 months to every 2 years. Each case will vary in terms of follow-up treatment frequency.
